11/4/22

Dear Families,

Next Friday, November 11, our school will be open for Veterans Day.  Many schools close for the federal holiday, however, even before my time as Head of School, the Village School made an intentional decision to keep school open on Veterans Day. The purpose is to teach students about American history, civics, patriotism, and the tremendous bravery and sacrifice of our country’s Veterans—both past and present. As a staff member of the Bennington Veterans’ Home said to me, too often students do not understand the significance of this day and only see it as a day off from school.

As explained in a letter that was sent home with your students this week, students in Grades 2-6 will participate in the Bennington Veterans Day Parade. The parade will begin at 11:11 a.m. at the old middle school on Main Street and continue to the Vermont Veterans’ Home. Students will be bused to the parade at 10:30 a.m. (PLEASE NOTE: this time is different from what was stated in the hardcopy letter). Family members and friends are welcome to meet us at the parade and walk with our school in support and celebration of those who have served our country.

In the afternoon, please join us for an all-school Veterans Day assembly at 2 p.m. in the school gymnasium. We encourage you to invite family members, friends, and/or neighbors who have served in any branch of the United States Armed Forces to attend the assembly. It would be an honor to recognize Veterans at our school and to celebrate their service with tributes and songs.

SOMETHING BIG is headed our way on Saturday, November 12, at 11 a.m.! Hopefully you saw the flier that was sent home about Dinoman (otherwise known as Bob Lisaius) and his troupe of Triassic giants taking over the Village School gymnasium. The John G. McCullough Free Library and the Village School are co-hosting this free event. Students of all ages will enjoy Dinoman’s “trip” through the Mesozoic Era,  as he teaches kids about dinosaurs and fossils with “magic, merry mayhem, and magnificent props.”  For more information about Dinoman, visit: https://dinoman.org

Thank you to everyone who participated in Track and Treat last weekend! As the saying goes: it takes a village! We were delighted to have a sunny day and a high-level of participation. We appreciated the assistance and support of so many volunteers who helped make the day a fun event for our community, and especially for our kids. Check out the race winners and some wonderful photos on at this link

Have a good weekend,
Tim Newbold
