Kindergartners working with Bennington College senior Hadley Pack on a community-informed art project.

Dear Families,

Tremendous thanks to so many of you for contributing gifts to your students’ classroom baskets for our school’s first-ever online auction! Your support exceeded our expectations, and Friends of the Village School volunteers are busy packaging some amazing baskets!

The pandemic pushed us to adapt to the changing times in many new ways, and fundraising differently is just another example. When the Friends of the Village School and the Board of Trustees thought about having an online auction for our school back in the fall, we could not have imagined that an in-person event might be possible in the spring. Yet, we, thankfully, find ourselves in such a situation and we are now looking forward to having an in-person “preview event” to kick off the online auction. Planning is still in the works, and more details about this event will be announced soon. The online auction will run from Friday, May 13 – Friday, May 27th. If you would like to contribute to the auction or volunteer your time to assist the organizers, please email

Last week I shared that the Bennington College World Language Programs partnership resumed at our school, and it has been beyond wonderful to have these dedicated and enthusiastic college students bringing the world into our classrooms. Another Bennington College student, Hadley Pack, is studying Public Action and Curation as part of her senior work, and she is spending some time with our kindergartners this week and next week working on a community-informed art project. Community is a perennial learning unit for the kindergarten class, and the students are exploring topics such as: What is a community? What kinds of communities do you belong to? What does a community need? Enjoy these photos of their work in progress:

As we head into the weekend, I’d like to share this quote from Coretta Scott King about community: “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.”

Have a good weekend,
