Vermont Arts Exchange (VAE) is once again happy to utilize the windows of the Thomayer building on Main St., Lincoln Square, North Bennington. Currently on display are Village School of North Bennington (VSNB) 5th grade self portraits and second grade Day of the Dead collages. Under guidance of VAE teaching artist Caitilin McAdoo, the masked 5th graders used photographs of themselves rather than mirrors while they worked on the project. Students worked in pastel and crayon.
Second graders learned about Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico, and now in many places around the world, and looked at photographs of people dressed up for the occasion. What stood out to them in these images was the theme of skulls, flowers and bright colors. When they got to work making their collages, they tried to incorporate some of that imagery into their own pieces.
With the pandemic keeping students isolated in their classrooms and families away from the building, VAE finds the Thomayer building perfect for a 24 hour gallery to showcase the students work. Grab a hot chocolate or coffee from Powers or Pangaea and enjoy the show!
